Hello there! I created this blog to chronicle my journey from a simple car owner to being a part of the Lyft driver community. A little background first though, to give you a little context and maybe a point of relativity between me and you. General relativity, not special relativity, my quantum friends.
I'm 27 years old with a Bachelor's in Psychology from Arizona State University, which will serve me well as I psychoanalyze every single passenger that hops in. (Seriously, why does everyone think I'm Freud all of a sudden when I drop the P-bomb?) Humor aside, I think my fascination and interest in my fellow human beings will make me a hit with passengers, not to mention all the fantastic classical music I will be showcasing. (I forgot to mention that my car's pseudonym will be the "Symphonic Sentra," because I will play nothing but soothing classics from the likes of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. More on this later.) I moved out here from Phoenix, AZ in early July '13--my fiancee landed a sweet content writing gig at Esurance, so I had to quit my IT job at ASU--and have been looking for work ever since.
Enter the Employment Angel: Lyft.
Let me just say first off that the process to becoming a Lyft driver couldn't be easier. Download the app on your iPhone or Android device, snap some photos of your car and some personal docs, talk to a Lyft rep, and then finally meet in person to get the vaunted pink mustachio that my car asked for last Christmas and didn't get. (Hey, it was on principle! No mustaches in the garage!) I haven't reached the in-person interview phase yet, because I wanted to test and see if I can hang with the stress of San Fran traffic.
Mission 1: Test your driving mettle in the greatest city on Earth.
To be frank, I'm scared as hell! Have you ever driven in San Francisco? Cue the cringes, anxiety, and the dreaded "nO face," a variant and diametric opposite to what we adults term that oh-so-funny expression of sheer ecstasy. But I digress.
Today marks the day that I am going to get a real good, juicy taste of what it's like to drive around for a few hours in the harrowing streets of San Francisco. I'll report back with all the spicy details that will hopefully, at the end of the day, give you some insight on what a soon-to-be Lyfter has to go through to secure perhaps the coolest job in the world.
FYI, my blog's mission is to provide a resource to help you decide whether being a Lyft driver is the right choice for you. And to make you chuckle every now and then with my punny sense of humor. Thanks for reading and there's more to come soon!
Warmly,
Brent
